STMA 203 - Audiovisual Translation-Arb |
This course addresses the growing demand for translators with skills in translating audiovisual texts. It introduces students to the conventions of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) with emphasis on subtitling. It emphasizes analyzing different aspects of modern spoken American English and American culture. Students will gain an understanding of their subject matter, audience, purpose, and demonstrate that understanding through translating excerpts from a variety of American movies, series, and shows using subtitling software. Students will learn how to analyze and evaluate other translators' work to sharpen their critical abilities as audiovisual translators.
Part of the: Professional Diploma in Media and Audiovisual Translation Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to: 1.Differentiate between AVT and other types of translation. 2.Differentiate between different types of AVT, e.g. dubbing, subtitling and voiceover. 3.Demonstrate knowledge of AVT terminology. 4.Identify general features of subtitling. 5. Divide dialogue lines into subtitles abiding by subtitling time and space constraints. 6.Achieve conciseness through various techniques, including condensation, decimation, and deletion. 7.Develop the skill of making the right decision as to what to translate and what to leave out. 8.Produce cohesive and coherent subtitles. 9.Use subtitling software to do spotting, achieve synchronization, and do simulation., 10.Translate idioms, allusions, and cultural-bound expressions according to subtitling rules and within a confined space. 11.Render the sense of humor in comic movies and series. 12.Reflect different aspects of idiosyncrasy in translation. 13.Fulfill their role as subtitlers within a polysemiotic environment. 14.Adapt the text in accordance with cultural, social, and marketing considerations. Prerequisite Course: -Applicants must be university graduates (could be waived on a case-by-case basis). -Completion of the Foundation Certificate in Translation and Interpreting. > Term duration: 12 Weeks Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Or Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test.
