STTI 103 - Translation Technique and Text Types
This course constitutes intensive exposure to translation at paragraph level. Learners are trained to analyze texts both semantically and syntactically. Source texts from various domains such as medicine, environment, politics and current events, education, manuals, culture, sciences, social sciences, technical writing, social media, and speeches shall be introduced. Translation techniques implemented include paraphrasing, restructuring, shifting, and loss and gain when needed. The focus of the course is to produce equivalent messages that are linguistically and grammatically clear. English to Arabic translation constitutes 70% and Arabic into English represents 30% of the course material. Prerequisite STTI101 & STTI102.

b.Environmental texts
c.Political and current events texts
d.Human rights and democracy
e.Operative texts: Instructions, Memos, Manuals, and Recipes
f.Cultural texts
g.Scientific texts
h.Texts in the field of social sciences
i.Technical texts
j.Social media texts
k.Speeches
2.Analyze the various stylistic features of each text type on the following levels:
a.Lexical level in terms of terminology and word formation
b.Syntactic level
c.Formal constraints or requirements
3.Apply appropriate translation techniques according to the nature of the text such as:
a.Paraphrase
b.Restructuring
c.Shifting
d.Loss/ gain when needed
4.Produce translated texts meeting the features of the target text in terms of meaning and structure.

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75 percent of the class sessions in order to be allowed to take the final examination.
