STTI 102 - Contrastive Grammar and Stylistics
Working on sentence level, this course explores grammatical structures that function differently when translating from English into Arabic and vice versa; and examines the translation strategies implemented. This course focuses on translating effectively so that the target structure would be as close as possible to original composition, striking a balance between naturalness and accuracy. The learner should ultimately be able to transfer different grammatical functions and structures from English into Arabic and vice versa appropriately, without compromising the meaning.

2. Translate appropriately different sentence structures in English and Arabic.
3. Contrast tense and aspect in English and Arabic.
4. Translate appropriately tense and aspect between English and Arabic.
5. Translate modality from English into Arabic.
6. Contrast passive voice in English and Arabic.
7. Translate appropriately passive voice between English and Arabic.
8. Contrast punctuation in English and Arabic.
9. Render appropriately punctuation between English and Arabic.
10. Contrast adverbs and adverbial phrases in English and Arabic.
11. Translate appropriately adverbs and adverbial phrases between English and Arabic.
12. Contrast adjectives and adjectival phrases in English and Arabic.
13. Translate appropriately adjectives and adjectival phrases between Arabic and English.
14. Contrast sentence connectors in English and Arabic.
15. Translate appropriately sentence connectors between English and Arabic.
16. Contrast affixation in English and Arabic.
17. Translate appropriately affixation between Arabic and English.
18. Contrast conditional sentences in English and Arabic.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
• Applicant must pass the Standardized English Proficiency Test (SEPT) and scores course ENGGB2A.
• Applicants who score ENGGB1C from SEPT or passing ENGGB1B must take English for Translators SLET 101 60 hours.
• Applicants must pass the Arabic Proficiency Test (APT) a minimum grade of 80. .
• Applicants who do not pass the APT must take the Arabic grammar ARBF 101 course.
•Applicants must have basic computer literacy.

Term duration: 12 Weeks
Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75 percent of the class sessions in order to be allowed to take the final examination.
