STTI 101 - Technology for Translators and Interpreters
This course is an exploration of the available tools for translators and interpreters on and off-line; application of electronic resources on translation and interpreting; introduction to website localization; and investigation of the on-line market and environment of translation and interpreting.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to
1. Find and assess online resources available for translators and interpreters.
2. Properly utilize online general purpose tools and specialized tools for translators and interpreters.
3. Demonstrate critical awareness of inter-lingual and cross-cultural issues in translation and interpreting.
4. Make informed translation choices that are appropriate in given contexts.
5. Select and use appropriate corpora and corpus analysis tools in the translation process.
6. Manage terminologies using term bases.
7. Employ SDL Trados to manage a translation project.
8. Employ CAT tools to support the translation process.
9. Employ CAI tools for early interpreting practice.
10. Select and use (remote) free translation memories to support the translation process.
11. Critically evaluate translations of their own and of peers.
12. Justify their translation choices.
Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
• Applicant must pass the Standardized English Proficiency Test (SEPT) and scores course ENGGB2A.
• Applicants who score ENGGB1C from SEPT or passing ENGGB1B must take English for Translators SLET 101 60 hours.
• Applicants must pass the Arabic Proficiency Test (APT) a minimum grade of 80.
• Applicants who do not pass the APT must take the Arabic grammar ARBF 101 course.
•Applicants must have basic computer literacy.

Term duration: 12 Weeks
Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75 percent of the class sessions in order to be allowed to take the final examination.
