STSI 202 - Simultaneous Interpreting
This course develops learners’ ability to listen, shadow and relay simultaneously in the target language what is being said. The course focuses on the ability to relate and shadow to a high degree of precision what is being said in a comprehensible language and clear voice. Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will develop interpreting strategies, which will be the basis for more advanced courses.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to
1. Shadow the speaker easily and confidently;
2. Overcome tongue-bound problems and mike-fright;
3. Interpret simultaneously a 2-5-minute simple technical oral text;
4. Demonstrate confidence through voice clarity and precision when interpreting; 5. Provide speech fillers;
6. Use appropriate style;
7. Use “lag and lead” techniques;
8. Interpret simultaneously a 5-10 -minute simple technical oral text;
9. Overcome gradually different obstacles encountered in interpreting situations (accent/dialect, speed, intricacy of the subject matter, and working conditions) ;
10. Demonstrate mastery of specialist terminology; and;
11. Interpret simultaneously a 10-15-minute simple technical oral text;

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
• STSI101 Public Speaking
• STST102 Conference Procedures for interpreters.

Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall
