STLU 301 - Project in Legal and UN Translation
The course aims at developing learners’ ability to both identify and practice the characteristic features of legalese and UN language. It is based on developing competencies in translating a text; using translation techniques and strategies considering cross-cultural differences. Furthermore, it strengthens the influence of technological advances on translators' practices. Translation of approximately 2000 words either legal or UN texts based on learners’ preference. Texts are subject to instructor's approval in order to guarantee that they meet the high quality standards. Six sessions will be dedicated to translation and translation review skills and the remaining six sessions to Arabic editing skills. This is a blended course, therefore 2 sessions will be conducted online and the remaining ten sessions will be face to face. Prerequisite: STLU201,STLU202,STLU203&STLU204.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to
1. further identify characteristic features of legal/UN documents;
2. translate a full specialized text as a project;
3. use formal legal/UN style in target language;
4. produce a high quality legal/UN translation;
5. detect and deal with loopholes resulting from inaccurate language used intentionally or unintentionally;
6. revise own translated documents using a mark sheet or rubric after strategically analyzing the translation commission;
7. edit own translated texts; and
8. compile a portfolio of individually-produced translations and present it.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
1. Applicants must be university graduates (a copy of the bachelor’s degree is required at time of admission).
2. Completion of the Foundation Certificate in Translation and Interpreting.

Term duration: 12 Weeks
Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
The assessment scheme of the Project courses is divided into four parts; the first three assess translation, and the fourth one is an overall assessment of the project including both translation and editing. The final grade is based on the student’s performance on different parts of the project throughout the term. Both translation and editing abilities are taken into consideration. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance.
