STSI 202 - Simultaneous Interpreting |
This course develops learners’ ability to listen, shadow and relay simultaneously in the target language what is being said. The course focuses on the ability to relate and shadow to a high degree of precision what is being said in a comprehensible language and clear voice. Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will develop interpreting strategies, which will be the basis for more advanced courses.
Part of the: Professional Diploma in Simultaneous Interpreting Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to 1. Shadow the speaker easily and confidently; 2. Overcome tongue-bound problems and mike-fright; 3. Interpret simultaneously a 2-5-minute simple technical oral text; 4. Demonstrate confidence through voice clarity and precision when interpreting; 5. Provide speech fillers; 6. Use appropriate style; 7. Use “lag and lead” techniques; 8. Interpret simultaneously a 5-10 -minute simple technical oral text; 9. Overcome gradually different obstacles encountered in interpreting situations (accent/dialect, speed, intricacy of the subject matter, and working conditions) ; 10. Demonstrate mastery of specialist terminology; and; 11. Interpret simultaneously a 10-15-minute simple technical oral text; Translation Competencies: 1. Language competency; 2. Ethical competency; Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): • STSI101 Public Speaking • STST102 Conference Procedures for interpreters. Term duration: 12 Weeks Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Or Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation.
