STSI 201 - Consecutive Interpreting
This course develops learners’ ability to listen and relay in the target language what has been said consecutively. The course focuses on the ability to relate accurately what has been said in a clear language and a high quality voice. Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will develop interpreting strategies, which will be the basis for more advanced courses.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to
1. Interpret consecutively a 2-5-minute narrative oral text;
2. Interpret consecutively a 2-5-minute descriptive & expository oral text;
3. Interpret consecutively a 2-5-minute argumentative oral text;
4. Demonstrate confidence in voice quality when translating;
5. Provide speech fillers;
6. convey shades of meaning as well as tailor language, tone, style and register to the speaker’s text and to the audiences;
7. Use problem solving techniques;
8. Evaluate problem solving techniques according to situation;
9. Use techniques to create logical progression of ideas in the target language;
10. Use a discontinuous or continuous method, according to need;
11. Demonstrate mastery of specialist terminology;
12. Reproduce all ear-catching remarks of speaker in target language;
13. take notes during consecutive interpretation assignments to ensure accuracy of the information given;
14. recognize different accents and regional language variations to interpret for delegates who are not speaking in their main language;
15. focus on a single source of sound in the presence of other distracting sounds;
16. comprehend and assess the original message and render it in the target language;
17. concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted, and be able to work under continuous stress;
18. develop techniques for focusing on more than one source of sound; and;
19. Handle interpreting devices and consoles;

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
• STSI101 Public Speaking
• STST102 Conference Procedures for interpreters .

Term duration: 12 Weeks
Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall
