STTI 104 - Introduction to Interpreting |
This course provides an overview of interpreting typology and training on the major techniques in the different types of interpreting. The course exposes learners to Sight Translation, Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting. This course aims at enhancing the speed of the mental translation process, in addition to providing hands on practice of the 3 different modes of interpreting.
Prerequisite STTI101 & STTI102. Part of the:Foundation Certificate in Translation and Interpreting Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to: 1. Explain the differences among the different types of interpreting. 2. Scan a page of print for main ideas. 3. Interpret at sight into the target language while scanning. 4. Interpret consecutively up to 30 seconds of general text. 5. Practice note-taking techniques for Consecutive Interpreting. 6. Interpret consecutively up to 3 minutes using notes. 7. Interpret simultaneously up to 15 minutes of general topics in moderate speed and clear accent. 8. Practice storing and retrieving through memory exercises. 9. Practice critical thinking and problem solving using coping tactics to deal with: a. accent/dialect b. technical terms c. speed d. working conditions. 10. Build a glossary of 200 – 300 terms. Term duration: 12 Weeks Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Or Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test.
