STSI 102 - Conference Procedures for interpreters |
This course provides intensive training on interpreting skills and essential procedures in conferences including listening, processing, storage, retrieval and other interpreting competencies.
Part of the: Professional Diploma in Simultaneous Interpreting Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to 1. respond to decontextualized words, isolated phrases and sentences by producing their equivalents; 2. respond to terminology in various fields by producing equivalents; 3. overcome mike and audience fright; 4. identify conference procedures; 5. respond to conference procedures; 6. produce comprehensible and accurate interpreting of conference speech for up to 2 minutes; 7. have good memory retention skills; remember information such as words, numbers, pictures, and procedures etc. ; 8. have acceptable note-taking skills; take notes during consecutive interpretation assignments to ensure accuracy of the information given; 9. handle stress, breathing and public speaking fright; 10. communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand; and; 11. have a clear voice and easily comprehensible in both source and target languages; Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): • Completion of the Foundation Certificate in Translation and Interpreting. • Applicants must be university graduates (could be waived on a case-by-case basis). • Applicant must pass the Oral Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSEPT) and score course SCMM B2 1 or pass course SCMM B1 3. • Applicants who score SCMM B1 2 in Oral SEPT or pass SCMM B1 1, must take English for Translators SLEI 101 60 hours. Term duration: 12 Weeks Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Or Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation.
