STSI 101 - Public Speaking for Interpreters |
Public Speaking is a preparatory course for more advanced interpreting courses. It focuses on rendering into English the meaning presented in an oral or written text. Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will develop listening strategies and text comprehension, upon which oral production will be based
Part of the: Professional Diploma in Simultaneous Interpreting Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to 1. outline an issue or a problem clearly, speculating about causes or consequences, and weighing advantages and disadvantages of different approaches; 2. give a clear, detailed description of how to carry out a procedure; 3. synthesize and report information and arguments from a number of sources; 4. relay in detail what is said to him/her in the standard spoken language even in a noisy environment; 5. engage in extended conversation on most general topics in a clearly participatory fashion, even in a noisy environment; 6. account for and sustain his/her opinions in discussion by providing relevant explanations, arguments and comments; 7. engage spontaneously from a prepared text and follow up interesting points raised by members of the audience, often showing remarkable fluency and ease of expression; 8. give a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options; 9. construct a chain of reasoned argument; 10. develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting his/her points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples; and; 11. give a clear, systematically developed presentation, explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options; Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): • Completion of the Foundation Certificate in Translation and Interpreting. • Applicants must be university graduates (could be waived on a case-by-case basis). • Applicant must pass the Oral Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSEPT) and score course SCMM B2 1 or pass course SCMM B1 3. •Applicants who score SCMM B1 2 in Oral SEPT or pass SCMM B1 1, must take English for Translators SLEI 101 60 hours. Term duration: 12 Weeks Schedule: 1 Session/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Or Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation.
