SCOT 100 - Online Teaching: Get Ready to Teach English Skills Using Technology
Synchronous online learning and English language teaching require interaction but not face to face learning. Instead, they focus on matching tools and skills with high-impact, with which active learning strategies are used in order to enhance student engagement. In this 20 hour hands-on course, participants will learn about matching English language skills with essential digital literacies for 21st century teaching. Focus is on the needs of teachers who teach English language skills online for a variety of reasons. Participants will go beyond learning about the skills needed to apply to select tech tools to their specific learning contexts, as they will also be able to develop their ability to judge when, how, and with which students to use such proposed skills and tools.

Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1.identify the basic components of an online English language course.
2.identify best practices for teaching English language skills in an online interactive, integrated learning environment.
3.apply best practices for teaching English language skills in an online interactive, integrated learning environment.
4.distinguish between the instructor’s role and the learner’s role in the online classroom.
5.apply methods of facilitating online discussions, giving presentations, and creating projects in an online context.
6.analyze methods of engaging and motivating learners in an online English skills course.
7.create interactive, integrated English skills lessons using G-suite tools & other free online tools.
8.implement appropriate instructor input, interaction & feedback in online English skills courses.
9.compare best practices for use of the suggested tech tools to deliver an integrated skill based English language syllabus.
10.apply up to date practices for use of the suggested tech tools to deliver an integrated skill based English language syllabus.
11.formulate interactive, integrated skills based lessons to match the suggested tech tools.
12.align assessment methods with the suggested tech tools to assess integrated skills.

Term duration: 4 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or othermeans of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performancein the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance oncontinual assessment measures and the final test. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be allowed to take the final examination.
