STT 100 - Advanced Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools
The course is designed to provide a practical study of computer-assisted translation tools as a key means for translators in the current global context. The course aims at giving hands-on experience in the use of desktop translation memory (TM) tools, cloud-based TM tools, and computer-assisted terminology management tools. The course also provides hands-on experience with using field-specific corpora and corpus analysis tools. Stand- alone course Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to 1. Conduct translation-related research in monolingual enriched English and Arabic corpora to extract translation equivalents. 2. Build their own Do-it-Yourself (DIY) specialized corpus. 3. Efficiently compile “ad-hoc” corpus from the internet. 4. Use various corpus analysis tools to elicit the kind of data needed from a certain corpus. 5. Identify the features of different translation memory softwares, namely, memoQ, SmartCat, SDL Trados Studio, and SDL MultiTerm. 6. Use memoQ translation software in translation projects using ready-made and new TMs as well as previously-created and new Termbases. 7. Use cloud-based Smartcat to manage translation projects using ready-made and new TMs and glossaries. 8. Create a profile as a freelancer, as well as state SL, TL and pricing using Smartcat. 9. Use SDL Trados Studio 2015 to create, process and manage translation projects of different formats (.doc, .ppt, etc.) with new, ready-made as well as multiple TMs. 10. Configure the automated quality assurance (QA) settings of SDL Trados Studio 2015. 11. Create and use an SDL MultiTerm termbase for terminology standardization and consistency. Admission Requirements for the above course: •Applicants must have basic computer literacy. Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test.
