SLAE 100 - Arabic Editing Skills
A survey of the Arabic language stylistic skills required for professional translators and editors; identifying common errors in composition that cause ambiguity in meaning; producing stylistically-acceptable texts in accordance with standards endorsed by the editors of Egyptian cultural magazines.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learneres will be able to:

1. Identify the most common stylistic, syntactic and grammatical pitfalls in contemporary standard Arabic.
2. Analyze the different language levels in written and spoken Arabic and the areas of usage.
3. Develop a taste for the genius of Arabic style as opposed to the “foreign accent” often resulting from negative inter-lingual transfer.
4. Develop self-consciousness of the reader’s attitude when reading any Arabic text, original or translated.
5. Identify different styles in the Arabic language and the general feature of each of them. of them.
6. Create sound and grammatical Arabic texts, taking into account the rhetorical characteristics of the Arabic language.
7. Read correctly texts in the Arabic language.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
• Applicants must pass the Arabic Proficiency Test (APT) a minimum grade of 70.
• Or complete the Arabic Grammar 1 course.

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term by tests, quizzes, assignments, projects or other means of evaluation. End-of-term achievement tests measure learners’ overall performance in the course. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on continual assessment measures and the final test. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners must attend at least 75 percent of the class sessions in order to be allowed to take the final examination.
