SCMM B21 - Oral Communication B21
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to catch with some effort much of what is said around them. They will also be able to convey degrees of emotion and highlight the personal significance of events and experiences. They will participate actively in routine and non-routine formal discussions on relevant matters and understand in detail the points given prominence by the speaker. They will also be able to understand and exchange complex information and advice on the full range of matters related to their occupational role. This is the first Oral Communication course of the B2 stage of the CEFR. Prerequisite: Successful completion of SCMM B13 or ENGGB1D or ENGG B2A or SCE Oral Engl score SCMM B21.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Listening

1. Catch with some effort much of what is said around him/her, but may find it difficult to participate effectively in discussion with several native speakers who do not modify their language in any way.
2. Understand most radio documentaries and most other recorded or broadcast audio material delivered in standard dialect and can identify the speaker's mood, tone etc….
3. Follow the discussion on matters related to his/her field, understand in detail the points given prominence by the speaker.
4. Understand detailed instructions reliably.
5. Understand and exchange complex information and advice on the full range of matters related to his/her occupational role.

Speaking

6. Convey degrees of emotion and highlight the personal significance of events and experiences.
7. Participate actively in routine and non-routine formal discussion.
8. Cope linguistically to negotiate a solution to a dispute like an undeserved traffic ticket, financial responsibility for damage in a flat, for blame regarding an accident.
9. Explain a problem which has arisen and make it clear that the provider of the service/customer must make a concession.
10. Pass on detailed information reliably.
11. Give a clear, detailed description of how to carry out a procedure.
12. Take initiatives in an interview, expand and develop ideas with little help or prodding from an interviewer.
13. Give clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to his/her field of interest.
14. Deliver announcements on most general topics with a degree of clarity, fluency and spontaneity which causes no strain or inconvenience to the listener.
Give a clear, systematically developed presentation, with highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score level SCMM B21 or successful completion of SCMM B13 or ENGGB1D or ENGG B2A .

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The add/drop period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
