SCMM A23 - Oral Communication A23
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to meet their concrete language needs in order to interact in structured situations and communicate using simple sentences and high frequency words. They will listen to and understand a variety of short texts in the personal and public domains. They will also be able to express themselves using simple sentences. This is the third Oral Communication course of the A2 stage of the CEFR. Prerequisite: Successful completion of SCMM A22.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

Listening

1. Follow changes of topic of factual TV news items, and form an idea of the main content.
2. Handle very short social exchanges but is rarely able to understand enough to keep conversation going of his/her own accord, though he/she can be made to understand if the speaker will take the trouble.
3. Generally follow changes of topic in formal discussion related to his/her field which is conducted slowly and clearly.

Speaking

4. Make him/herself understood in an interview and communicate ideas and information on familiar topics, provided he/she can ask for clarification occasionally, and is given some help to express what he/she wants to.
5. Say what he/she thinks about things when addressed directly in a formal meeting, provided he/she can ask for repetition of key points if necessary.
6. Deal with common problems of everyday living such as travel, lodgings, eating and shopping.
7. Answer straightforward follow up questions if he/she can ask for repetition and if some help with the formulation of his/her reply is possible.
8. Answer simple questions and respond to simple statements in an interview.
9. Explain what he/she likes or dislikes about something.
10. Give a short, rehearsed presentation on a familiar subject and a topic pertinent to his/her everyday life, briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions, plans and actions.
11. Exchange relevant information and give his/her opinion on practical problems when asked directly, provided he/she receives some help with formulation and can ask for repetition of key points if necessary.
12. Describe plans and arrangements, habits and routines, past activities and personal experiences.

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The add/drop period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
