SCMM A22 - Oral Communication A22
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to meet their concrete language needs in order to interact with reasonable ease in structured situations and communicate using high frequency words. They will listen to and understand simple texts related to everyday life. They will also be able to describe people and/or events. This is the second Oral Communication course of the A2 stage of the CEFR. Prerequisite:Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score level SCMM A22 or successful completion of Oral Communication SCMM A21, English for Effective Communication ENGG A2B or ENGG A2C.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Listening

1. Understand and extract the essential information from short, recorded passages dealing with predictable everyday matters that are delivered slowly and clearly.
2. Understand enough to manage simple, routine exchanges without undue effort.
3. Understand what is said clearly, slowly and directly to him/her in simple everyday conversation.
4. Identify the topic of discussion around him/her which is conducted slowly and clearly.
5. Find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material.
6. Understand enough to manage simple, routine tasks without undue effort, asking very simply for repetition when he/she does not understand.

Speaking

7. Participate in short conversations in routine contexts on topics of interest.
8. Make and respond to suggestions.
9. Give short, basic descriptions of events and activities.
10. Say what he/she likes and dislikes.
11. Make and respond to invitations, suggestions and apologies.
12. Discuss everyday practical issues in a simple way when addressed clearly, slowly and directly.
13. Describe everyday aspects of his/her environment.
14. Describe his/her family, living conditions, educational background, present or most recent job.
15. Deliver very short, rehearsed announcements of predictable, learnt content which are intelligible to listeners who are prepared to concentrate.
16. Deal with practical everyday demands: finding out and passing on straightforward factual information.
17. Ask and answer questions about pastimes and past activities.
18. Give a short, rehearsed, presentation on a familiar workplace subject.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score level SCMM A22 or successful completion of Oral Communication SCMM A21, English for Effective Communication ENGG A2B or ENGG A2C.

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule:2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The add/drop period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
