ENGG B2C - English for Intercultural Communication B2C
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able understand announcements and messages on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard dialect at normal speed, and specialized articles outside their field, provided they can use a dictionary occasionally to confirm their interpretation of terminology. They will express their ideas and opinions with precision, present and respond to complex lines of argument convincingly. They will outline an issue or a problem clearly, speculating about causes or consequences, and weighing advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. They will also be able to give a clear, systematically developed presentation, with highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail, and write an essay or report which develops an argument, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The course is the third of the B2 stage of the CEFR. Prerequisites:Successful completion of ENGG B2B or appropriate SEPT score Level ENGG B2C.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

Listening& Reading

1. Understand announcements and messages on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard dialect at normal speed.
2. Understand most tv news and current affairs programmes.
3. Understand specialised articles outside his/her field, provided he/she can use a dictionary occasionally to confirm his/her interpretation of terminology.
4. Understand lengthy, complex instructions in his/her field, including details on conditions and warnings, provided he/she can reread difficult sections.

Speaking& Writing

5. Express his/her ideas and opinions with precision, present and respond to complex lines of argument convincingly.
6. Take an active part in informal discussion in familiar contexts, commenting, putting point of view clearly, evaluating alternative proposals and making and responding to hypotheses.
7. Outline an issue or a problem clearly, speculating about causes or consequences, and weighing advantages and disadvantages of different approaches.
8. Write letters conveying degrees of emotion and highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences and commenting on the correspondent's news and views.
9. Develop an argument well enough to be followed without difficulty most of the time.
10. Give a clear, systematically developed presentation, with highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail.
11. Depart spontaneously from a prepared text and follow up interesting points raised by members of the audience, often showing remarkable fluency and ease of expression.
12. Write an essay or report that develops an argument systematically with appropriate highlighting of significant points and relevant supporting detail.
13. Write an essay or report which develops an argument, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (SEPT) and score level ENGG B2C or successful completion of ENGG B1D.

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term. Two continual assessments on speaking and another two on writing skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the four continual assessment measures.

Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The drop/add period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
