ENGG A1D - Survival English A1D
Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will be able to understand everyday expressions aimed at the satisfaction of simple needs of a concrete type delivered directly to them in clear, slow and repeated speech by a sympathetic speaker. They will also be able to ask and answer questions about themselves and other people, and about things they may have. Moreover, they will be able to understand and produce short simple messages and texts. The course is the fourth in the “Survival English” stage. Prerequisite: Successful completion of ENGGA1C Minimum Grade of D .

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Reading & Listening

1. Understand everyday expressions aimed at the satisfaction of simple needs of a concrete/abstract type.
2. Understand enough to manage simple, routine tasks without undue effort, asking for repetition when he/she does not understand.
3. Identify the topic of discussion around him/her that is conducted slowly and clearly.
4. Understand clear, standard speech on familiar matters directed at him/her, provided he/she can ask for repetition or reformulation from time to time.
5. Understand short texts, rereading as required.
6. Get the gist of the content of informational material and simple descriptions.
7. Check spelling and revise own written work.

Speaking & Writing

8. Ask how people are and react to news.
9. Communicate in routine tasks to ask for and provide things, to get simple information and to discuss what to do next.
10. Answer straightforward follow up questions if he/she can as for repetition and if some help with the formulation of his/her reply is possible.
11. Communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information.
12. Give short descriptions of events and activities.
13. Explain what he/she likes or dislikes about something.
14. Tell a story or describe something in a simple list of points.
15. Give a short, rehearsed, presentation on a familiar work-related subject.
16. Deal with common problems of everyday living such as travel, lodgings, eating and shopping.
17. Interact and communicate depending on rephrasing and repair.
18. Ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to statements in different situations.
19. Ask and answer questions about details after reading a short simple text.
20. Write simple sentences about themselves and imaginary people and or events.
21. Write about everyday aspects of their environment e.g. People, places, a job or study experience in linked sentences.
22. Write short, simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate need.
23. Write very short, basic descriptions of events, past activities and personal experiences.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):

1. Completion of Survival English (ENGG A1C) .

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term. Two continual assessments on speaking and another two on writing skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the four continual assessment measures.

Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The drop/add period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
