ENGG A1C - Survival English A1C
Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will be able to get an idea of the content of simple informational material and short simple descriptions with visual support. They will also be able to ask and answer simple questions, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics. Moreover, they will be able to understand and produce short simple messages and texts. The course is the third in the “Survival English” stage. Prerequisite: Successful completion of ENGGA1B Minimum Grade of D or appropriate SEPT score ENGGA1C

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Reading & Listening

1. Use clues to guess the meaning of simple texts.
2. Understand expressions aimed at the satisfaction of different needs delivered directly to him/her.
3. Understand questions and instructions addressed carefully and slowly to him/her and follow simple directions.
4. Identify the main idea of a short reading text.
5. Guess the meaning of new words using visual clues in simplified reading material.
6. Get an idea of the content of simpler informational material and short simple descriptions, especially if there is visual support.
7. Understand simple texts, rereading as required.
8. Explain time words in a short reading text.
9. Understand questions about personal daily schedule.
10. Check spelling and revise his/her written work.

Speaking & Writing:

1. Respond to questions about personal daily schedule.
2. Talk about needs, feelings, work skills and duties at work.
3. Talk about places in the city, family relationships, daily activities, past experiences; future activities, etc…
4. Reply in an interview to simple direct questions spoken slowly and clearly in direct non-idiomatic speech about personal details.
5. Interact in communication depending on some repetition, rephrasing and repair.
6. Maintain a short dialogue about a previously learned topic.
7. Ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to statements in areas of immediate need or on familiar topics.
8. Write short simple notes.
9. Write simple phrases and sentences about themselves and people, where they live and what they do.
10. Link words or groups of words with linear connectors.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
1.Survival English (ENGG A1C) on the SEPT.
2.Completion of Survival English (ENGG A1B).
3. Applicants must have basic computer literacy.

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term. Two continual assessments on speaking and another two on writing skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the four continual assessment measures.

Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The drop/add period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
