ENGG A1B - Survival English A1B
Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will be able to interact in simple, routine and familiar situations asking and answering simple direct questions. They will also be able to write simple phrases and sentences about themselves and imaginary people. Moreover, they will be able to understand and produce short simple messages and texts. The course is the second in the “Survival English” stage. Prerequisite:Successful completion of ENGG A1A Minimum Grade of D.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Reading & Listening

1. Follow speech that is slow and carefully articulated, with long pauses for him/her to assimilate meaning.
2. Understand instructions addressed carefully to him/her and follow short, simple directions.
3. Understand every day expressions aimed at the satisfaction of simple needs of a concrete type, delivered directly to him/her in clear, slow, and repeated speech by a sympathetic speaker.
4. Look for clues to understand new words.
5. Guess information from the title of a text.
6. Follow instructions and directions.
7. Understand short simple texts a single phrase at a time, picking up familiar names, words and basic phrases and re reading as required.
8. Understand short simple messages.
9. Recognize, words and basic phrases on simple notices in the most common everyday situations.
10. Recognize familiar names, words and basic phrases on simple notices on most common everyday situations.
11. Follow, simple written directions (e.g., to go from x to y).
12. Read a short, rehearsed statement - e.g. To introduce a speaker.
13. Check spelling and revise his/her work.

Speaking& Writing

1. Understand questions and instructions addressed carefully and slowly to him/her and follow short, simple directions.
2. Form simple yes/no questions.
3. Form and answer yes/no questions.
4. Produce every day expressions aimed at the satisfaction of simple needs of a concrete type.
5. Ask people for things, and give people things.
6. Ask and answer questions about themselves and other people; where they live, people they know, things they have.
7. Describe himself/herself, what he/she does and where he/she lives.
8. Talk about their jobs and the skills required.
9. Talk about household activities, leisure activities and things they did in the past.
10. Ask and answer questions about details such as time, place, and social events.
11. Give instructions and directions.
12. Interact in a simple way but communication is partially dependent on repetition at a slower rate of speech, rephrasing and repair.
13. Form and respond to simple questions, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of need or on familiar topics.
14. Write short simple texts.
15. Produce simple written directions (e.g., to go from x to y).
16. Ask for or pass on personal details .
17. Write numbers and dates, own name, nationality, address, age, date of birth or arrival in the country etc. Such as on a hotel registration form.
18. Check spelling and revise his/her work.
19. Link words or groups of words with basic linear connectors.
20. Write a short simple postcards, forms, notes and messages.
21. Write simple phrases and sentences about themselves and imaginary people, where they live and what they do.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
1.Completion of Survival English (ENGG A1A)

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term. Two continual assessments on speaking and another two on writing skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the four continual assessment measures.

Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The drop/add period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
