ENGG A1A - Survival English A1A
Utilizing learner-centered methodology and task-based instruction, learners will be able to construct a foundation for their English language proficiency through understanding instructions addressed to them carefully and slowly. They will also be able to follow short simple directions and fill out simple registration forms writing basic personal details. Moreover, they will be able to understand and produce short simple messages and texts. The course is the first in the “Survival English” stage. Prerequisite: SEPT score A1A.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learneres will be able to:

Reading & Listening

1. Identify numbers, days and months.
2. Understand and follow simple directions.
3. Understand speech that is very slow and carefully articulated, with long pauses for him/her to assimilate meaning.
4. Understand every day expressions aimed at the satisfaction of very simple needs of a concrete type. delivered directly to him/her in clear, slow, and repeated speech by a sympathetic speaker.
5. Read very short, rehearsed statements.
6. Follow very short, simple written directions (e.g., to go from x to y).
7. Understand short, simple messages.
8. Recognize familiar names, words and very basic phrases on simple notices in the most common everyday situations.
9. Get an idea of the content of simple informational material and short simple descriptions, especially if there is visual support.
10. Check spelling and review his/her work.

Speaking& Writing

11. Produce simple isolated utterances about people and places.
12. Produce every day expressions aimed at the satisfaction of very simple needs of a concrete type.
13. Understand questions and instructions addressed carefully and slowly to him/her and follow very short, simple directions.
14. Ask for and give people things.
15. Indicate time by such phrases as “in november”, “three o'clock”.
16. Describe himself/herself, what he/she does and where he/she lives.
17. Ask and answer questions about numbers, quantities, cost, dates and time.
18. Ask and answer very simple questions, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.
19. Interact in a simple way but communication is totally dependent on repetition at a slower rate of speech, rephrasing and repair.
20. Make an introduction using basic greeting and leave-taking expressions.
21. Use capital letters and periods.
22. Link words or groups of words with very basic linear connectors like “and” or “then”.
23. Write very short simple sentences.
24. Write very short, simple directions (e.g., to go from x to y).
25. Write numbers and dates, own name, nationality, address, age, date of birth.
26. Write a short simple postcard, forms, notes and messages.

Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s):
None.

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term. Two continual assessments on speaking and another two on writing skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the four continual assessment measures.

Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The drop/add period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
