ENGG B2D - English for Intercultural Communication B2D
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to follow the essentials of lectures, talks and reports and other forms of academic/professional presentation which are propositionally and linguistically complex. They will contribute, account for and sustain their opinions, evaluate alternative proposals and make and respond to hypotheses. They will also be able to give a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options, in addition to synthesizing information and arguments from a number of sources. The course is the fourth of the B2 stage of the CEFR. Prerequisites:Successful completion of ENGG B2C.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Listening& Reading

1. Follow the essentials of lectures, talks and reports and other forms of academic/ professional presentation which are propositionally and linguistically complex.
2. Understand most tv news and current affairs programmes.
3. Understand documentaries, live interviews, talk shows, plays and the majority of films in standard dialect.
4. Obtain information, ideas and opinions from highly specialised sources within his/her field.
5. Understand specialised articles outside his/her field, including details on conditions and warnings, provided he/she can reread difficult sections.

Speaking& Writing

6. Express his/her ideas and opinions with precision, present and respond to complex lines of argument convincingly.
7. Contribute, account for and sustain his/her opinion, evaluate alternative proposals and make and respond to hypotheses.
8. Synthesise and report information and arguments from a number of sources.
9. Write letters conveying degrees of emotion and highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences and commenting on the correspondent's news and views.
10. Construct a chain of reasoned argument.
11. Give a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
12. Take a series of follow up questions with a degree of fluency and spontaneity which poses no strain for either him/herself or the audience.
13. Evaluate different ideas or solutions to a problem.
14. Write an essay or report which develops an argument, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Successful completion of ENGG B2C

Term duration: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session

Assessments and Attendance:
Learners are assessed throughout the term. Two continual assessments on speaking and another two on writing skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the four continual assessment measures.

Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions to be promoted to the next course.

Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.

Notes: The drop/add period is the first seven working days of each term, accordingly learners are advised to attend the first two sessions.
