SCMM B23 - Oral Communication B23 |
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able understand announcements and messages on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard dialect at normal speed. They will be able to follow the essentials of lectures, talks and reports and other forms of academic/professional presentation, which are propositionally and linguistically complex. They will contribute, account for and sustain their opinions, evaluate alternative proposals and make and respond to hypotheses. They will also be able to give a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options, in addition to synthesizing information and arguments from a number of sources. This is the third Oral Communication course of the B2 stage of the CEFR.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of SCMM B2 2.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Listening
1. Understand announcements and messages on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard dialect at normal speed.
2. Understand most tv news and current affairs programs.
3. Follow the essentials of lectures, talks and reports and other forms of academic/professional presentation which are propositionally and linguistically complex.
4. Obtain information, ideas and opinions from highly specialized sources within his/her field.
Speaking
5. Outline an issue or a problem clearly, speculating about causes or consequences, and weighing advantages and disadvantages of different approaches.
6. Express his/her ideas and opinions with precision, present and respond to complex lines of argument convincingly.
7. Contribute, account for and sustain his/her opinion, evaluate alternative proposals and make and respond to hypotheses.
8. Synthesize and report information and arguments from a number of sources.
9. Construct a chain of reasoned argument.
10. Give a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
11. Take a series of follow up questions with a degree of fluency and spontaneity which poses no strain for either him/herself or the audience.
12. Depart spontaneously from a prepared text and follow up interesting points raised by members of the audience, often showing remarkable fluency and ease of expression.
Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course. Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.
