SCMM B22 - Oral Communication B22 |
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to understand documentaries, live interviews, talk shows, plays and the majority of films in standard dialect. They will engage in extended conversation on most general topics in a clearly participatory fashion, even in a noisy environment, and account for and sustain their opinions in discussion by providing relevant explanations, arguments and comments. They will also develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting their points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples. This is the second Oral Communication course of the B2 stage of the CEFR.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of SCMM B21 or ENGG B2B or ENGG B2C or SCE Oral Engl score B22.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Listening
1. Understand recordings in standard dialect likely to be encountered in social, professional or academic life and identify speaker viewpoints and attitudes as well as the information content.
2. Understand documentaries, live interviews, talk shows, plays and the majority of films in standard dialect.
3. Understand in detail what is said to him/her in the standard spoken language even in a noisy environment.
Speaking
4. Engage in extended conversation on most general topics in a clearly participatory fashion, even in a noisy environment.
5. Account for and sustain his/her opinions in discussion by providing relevant explanations, arguments and comments.
6. Keep up with an animated discussion, identifying accurately arguments supporting and opposing points of view.
7. Outline a case for compensation, using persuasive language to demand satisfaction and state clearly the limits to any concession he/she is prepared to make.
8. Carry out an effective, fluent interview, departing spontaneously from prepared questions, following up and probing interesting replies.
9. Develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting his/her points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples.
10. Explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
11. Take an active part in informal discussion in familiar contexts, commenting, putting point of view clearly, evaluating alternative proposals and making and responding to hypotheses.
12. Give a clear, systematically developed presentation, with highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail.
Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): 1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score level SCMM B22 or successful completion of SCMM B21 or ENGG B2B or ENGG B2C. Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course. Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.
