SCMM B13 - Oral Communication B13 |
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to generally follow the main points of extended discussion around them, provided speech is clearly articulated in standard dialect. They will express their thoughts about abstract or cultural topics such as music, films, etc…, and explain why something is a problem. They will carry out a prepared interview, checking and confirming information. They will also be able to summarize, report and give their opinion about accumulated factual information on familiar routine and non-routine matters within their field with some confidence. This is the third Oral Communication course of the B1 stage of the CEFR.
Prerequisite: : Successful completion of SCMM B1 2.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
Listening
1. Follow generally the main points of extended discussion around him/her, provided speech is clearly articulated in standard dialect.
2. Follow up questions, but may have to ask for repetition if the speech was rapid.
3. Follow a lecture or talk within his/her own field, provided the subject matter is familiar and the presentation straightforward and clearly structured.
4. Follow much of what is said that is related to his/her field, provided interlocutors avoid very idiomatic usage and articulate clearly.
Speaking
5. Take part in routine formal discussion of familiar subjects which is conducted in clearly articulated speech in the standard dialect and which involves the exchange of factual information, receiving instructions or the discussion of solutions to practical problems.
6. Explain why something is a problem, discuss what to do next, compare and contrast alternatives.
7. Express his/her thoughts about abstract or cultural topics such as music and films
8. Make his/her opinions and reactions understood as regards solutions to problems or practical questions of where to go, what to do, how to organize an event (e.g. An outing).
9. Put over a point of view clearly, but has difficulty engaging in debate.
10. Make his/her opinions and reactions understood as regards possible solutions or the question of what to do next, giving brief reasons and explanations.
11. Carry out a prepared interview, checking and confirming information, though he/she may occasionally have to ask for repetition if the other person's response is rapid or extended.
12. Take some initiatives in an interview/consultation (e.g. To bring up a new subject) but is very dependent on interviewer in the interaction.
13. Briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions, plans and actions.
14. Summarize, report and give his/her opinion about accumulated factual information on familiar routine and non-routine matters within his field with some confidence.
15. Give a prepared straightforward presentation on a familiar topic within his/her field which is clear enough to be followed without difficulty most of the time, and in which the main points are explained with reasonable precision.
Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course. Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.
