SCMM B12 - Oral Communication B12 |
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to understand simple technical information and catch the main points in TV programs on familiar topics when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. They will also be able to exchange, check and confirm accumulated factual information on familiar routine and non-routine matters within relevant fields with some confidence. They will give a prepared straightforward presentation on a familiar topic within his/her field which is clear enough to be followed without difficulty most of the time, and in which the main points are explained with reasonable precision. They will also give detailed accounts of experiences, describing feelings and reactions. This is the second Oral Communication course of the B1 stage of the CEFR.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of B1 1, ENGG B1B or ENGG B1C or SCE Oral Engl score B12.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
Listening
1. Understand the information content of the majority of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics of personal interest delivered in clear standard speech.
2. Catch the main points in tv programs on familiar topics when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.
3. Follow films in which visuals and action carry much of the storyline, and which are delivered clearly in straightforward language.
4. Follow much of what is said around him/her on general topics provided interlocutors avoid very idiomatic usage and articulate clearly.
Speaking
5. Express and respond to feelings such as surprise, happiness, sadness, interest and indifference.
6. Compare and contrast alternatives, discussing what to do, where to go, who or which to choose etc….
7. Express belief, opinion, agreement and disagreement politely.
8. Give brief comments on the views of others.
9. Make a complaint.
10. Exchange, check and confirm accumulated factual information on familiar routine and non-routine matters within his/her field with some confidence.
11. Find out and pass on straightforward factual information.
12. Use a prepared questionnaire to carry out a structured interview, with some spontaneous follow up questions.
13. Describe dreams, hopes and ambitions.
14. Describe events, real or imagined.
15. Give a prepared straightforward presentation on a familiar topic within his/her field which is clear enough to be followed without difficulty most of the time, and in which the main points are explained with reasonable precision.
16. Summarize and give his or her opinion about a short story, article, talk, discussion interview, or documentary and answer further questions of detail.
17. Provide concrete information required in an interview/consultation (e.g. Describe symptoms to a doctor) but does so with limited precision.
Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): 1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score course SCMM B12 or successful completion of B1 1, ENGG B1B or ENGG B1C . Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course. Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.
