SCMM B11 - Oral Communication B11 |
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to understand the main points of radio news bulletins and simpler recorded material about familiar subjects delivered relatively slowly and clearly, and follow the outline of straightforward short talks on familiar topics. They will also be able to follow clearly articulated speech directed at them in everyday conversation. They will manage a variety of routine and non-routine interactions. This is the first Oral Communication course of the B1 stage of the CEFR.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of A2 3 or ENGG A2D or ENGG B1A.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
Listening
1. Follow straightforward short talks on familiar topics provided these are delivered in clearly articulated standard speech.
2. Understand the main points of radio news bulletins and simpler recorded material about familiar subjects delivered relatively slowly and clearly.
3. Understand a large part of many TV programs on topics of personal interest such as interviews, short lectures, and news reports when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.
4. Follow clearly articulated speech directed at him/her in everyday conversation, though will sometimes have to ask for repetition of particular words and phrases.
5. Follow generally the main points in an informal discussion with friends provided speech is clearly articulated in standard dialect.
6. Follow generally what is said and, when necessary, can repeat back part of what someone has said to confirm mutual understanding.
Speaking
7. Give brief comments on the views of others.
8. Deal with most transactions likely to arise whilst travelling, arranging travel or accommodation, or dealing with authorities during a foreign visit.
9. Cope with less routine situations in shops, post office, bank, e.g. Returning an unsatisfactory purchase.
10. Describe how to do something, giving detailed instructions.
11. Ask for and follow detailed directions.
12. Obtain more detailed information.
13. Give straightforward descriptions on a variety of familiar subjects within his/her field of interest.
14. Reasonably and fluently relate a straightforward narrative or description as a linear sequence of points.
15. Narrate a story.
16. Deliver short, rehearsed announcements on a topic pertinent to everyday occurrences in his/her field which, despite possible foreign stress and intonation, are nevertheless clearly intelligible.
Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): 1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score course SCMM B11, successful completion of A2 3 or ENGG A2D or ENGG B1A Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course. Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.
