SCMM A21 - Oral Communication A21 |
Utilizing learner-centered methodology, flipped classsroom and task-based instruction, learners will be able to meet their concrete language needs in slow and clearly-articulated speech, while identifying and using basic phrases, expressions and very high frequency words. They will listen to and understand short simple messages, and manage simple routine interactions. They will also be able to describe people and/or events. This is the first Oral Communication course of the A2 stage of the CEFR.
Prerequisite: : Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score level SCMM A21 or successful completion of ENGG A1D or ENGG A2A.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
Listening
1. Generally identify the topic of discussion around him/her that is conducted slowly and clearly.
2. Catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
3. Understand simple directions relating to how to get from x to y, on foot or by public transport.
4. Identify the main point of tv news items reporting events, accidents etc. Where the visual supports the commentary.
5. Generally understand clear, standard speech on familiar matters directed at him/her, provided he/she can ask for repetition or reformulation from time to time.
Speaking
6. Establish social contact: greetings and farewells; introductions; giving thanks.
7. Ask for and provide personal information.
8. Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information.
9. Ask and answer questions about habits and routines.
10. Communicate in simple and routine tasks using simple phrases to ask for and provide things, to get simple information and to discuss what to do next.
11. Give and receive information about quantities, numbers, prices etc…
12. Use simple descriptive language to compare objects and possessions.
13. Ask and answer questions about what they do at work and in free time.
14. Give a short, rehearsed, presentation on a familiar workplace subject.
15. Give short, basic descriptions of events and activities.
16. Describe everyday aspects of his environment e.g. People, places, a job or study experience.
17. Explain what he/she likes or dislikes about something.
18. Discuss what to do, where to go and make arrangements to meet.
19. Discuss what to do in the evening, at the weekend.
Admission Requirements for the above certificate(s): 1. Applicants must take the Standardized English Proficiency Test (OSPT) and score level SCMM A21 or successful completion of ENGG A1D or ENGG A2A . Term duration: 6 Weeks Schedule: 2 Sessions/week - 2.5 Hrs/Session Assessments and Attendance: Learners are assessed throughout the term through oral performance tasks. Three continual assessments on speaking skills. The final grade in each course is based on learners’ performance on the three continual assessment measures. Final course grades are NOT based on attendance, since in accordance with SCE’s attendance policy, learners MUST attend at least 75% of the class sessions in order to be promoted to the next course. Attendance: All learners must attend at least 75% of the class sessions or class hours. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course, although the learner will be allowed to attend classes.
